Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

At Liverpool John Moores University, we are committed to pioneering research that makes a tangible impact on society. Our latest project funded by The Dunhill Medical Trust aims to transform how architects and designers create safer living environments for older adults. By leveraging wearable sensors and the latest advancements in computer vision and 3D modelling technology, we aim to develop cutting-edge tools that reduce the risk of falls in homes. We have assembled a multinational expert team for this project. If you're driven by innovation and have a passion for human-centred design, we invite you to apply.

Interdisciplinary Expertise: We are seeking a candidate with a strong focus on 3D environment modelling and computer vision, which are the most critical components of this role. While expertise in human movement and gaze behaviour analysis is beneficial, we can provide training in these areas. The successful candidate will drive the modelling and computer vision aspects, thinking creatively and working autonomously to shape the direction of the project, with support from our team and international collaborators.

Become a Research Innovator: Dive deep into the world of wearable sensors. You'll be at the forefront of both laboratory and in-situ investigations, gathering multi-factorial data to identify environmental characteristics that influence fall risks, gaze, and movement patterns. At LJMU, you will have access to a fully-equipped biomechanics lab and experimental replica homes, where you can refine and apply your skills in a realistic setting.

Translate Knowledge to Action: Utilise 3D object identification from video data to pinpoint areas of increased fall risk and implement living environment modifications that enhance comfort and accessibility.

Shape the Future of Design: Develop 3D models with cutting-edge approaches to quantify the relationship between occupants’ gaze and movement patterns, linking these to the geometrical and visual properties of their environment. Your work will inform both post-occupancy evaluations of existing dwellings and pre-occupancy designs of new homes. Your insights will guide architects and designers in optimising home environments.

Be a Data-Driven Storyteller: Analyse and interpret data, preparing it for publication in high-impact journals and presentations at national and international conferences. Your findings will contribute to real-world guidance for home modifications, influencing industry practices.

Mentor and Lead: Support junior colleagues in developing their research skills and supervise research teams or projects. Contribute to a supportive working environment and participate in university activities.

In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.

This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.

If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.

LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion or belief.  All our appointments are made on merit.

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.

LJMU are committed to adhering to the Principles set out in the Researcher Development Concordat; in line with this all fixed-term researchers will be supported to complete 10 days professional development activities per year (pro-rata).
