Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.

The International Relations & Politics programme area sits within the People, Politics and Communication department, part of the School of Humanities and Social Science. We are seeking to appoint a sabbatical cover fixed-term Lecturer in International Relations & Politics with an interest in British Politics.  The contract will run from 1st  September 2025 until 15th  January 2026.

Following the successful launch of our MA in International Relations in 2017, we introduced the BA (Hons) International Relations & Politics in 2019. As part of our strategic growth, we have now validated a new BA (Hons) Criminology and International Relations, beginning in 2025/26. This post offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a growing and ambitious subject area at LJMU on a fixed-term basis.

We are seeking to appoint a temporary lecturer able to teach on several modules related to politics at the undergraduate level. You will be required to lead and teach on several modules across the academic term. We need someone who teach an L4 comparative politics module, and an L5 British Politics module. In addition, we will require you to help out on several other modules, and supervise students on L5, L6, and L7 research project modules. Module guides can be sent upon request.

The People, Politics and Communication department brings together International Relations & Politics, Media, Culture & Communication, and Sociology. Colleagues are members of the Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research (CSPR), and we would expect the successful candidate to contribute to its work and to develop teaching that attracts students across the department.

The role also involves contributing to teaching at Foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels more broadly, as needed. Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and have appropriate undergraduate teaching experience.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering high-quality teaching.
  • Undertaking administrative roles commensurate to role, as directed by the International Relations & Politics area leader, Head of People, Politics & Communication department, or Director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Matthew Alan Hill (m.a.hill@ljmu.ac.uk), International Relations & Politics Area Lead.

LJMU is an equal opportunities employer and welcome applicants from all background and communities irrespective of age, transgender status, disability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and religion or belief.  All our appointments are made on merit.

Anticipated interview date: 14th-15th July 2025

Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
