Campus Support Officer Driving (Security)
Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.
About the role
Liverpool John Moores University is one of the largest universities in the UK, with over 23,000 students, 2,400 staff, and a campus spread across the heart of Liverpool city centre.
Our Campus Support team keeps it all running safely, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
This is a frontline role with real variety. One moment you might be supporting a student in distress, the next you are responding to a fire alarm, patrolling a building, or managing access to site. You will work as part of a close-knit shift team, operating across multiple campus locations, and you will be one of the most visible and trusted faces of the university to everyone who studies, works, or visits here.
The role requires a full UK driving licence (maximum 3 penalty points), as you will drive and maintain university security vehicles and provide cover for executive drivers when needed.
You will work a continental rotating 12-hour shift pattern, 4 shifts on and 4 shifts off, alternating between days and nights. It is a pattern that suits people who value longer stretches of time off between shifts.
What you will be doing
Your day-to-day will include a mix of the following:
- Responding to security incidents, emergencies, and fire alarms across campus
- Patrolling buildings and open spaces, keeping them safe and welcoming
- Operating the security control room, including CCTV, access control, and communications
- Providing first-line support to students, staff, and visitors, including emotional support and mental health first aid
- Locking and unlocking premises and managing building keys
- Supporting university events including graduations and open days
- Completing security reports and maintaining accurate records
- Working alongside facilities and estates colleagues to keep campus running smoothly
About you
You do not need to come from a traditional security background. What matters more is that you are a people person, calm under pressure, and genuinely care about providing a good service to everyone you meet.
You will bring:
- Experience in a customer-facing or public-facing role
- Good communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of situations with tact and good judgement
- A practical, flexible approach and the ability to stay composed when things get busy
- A willingness to learn and develop within the role
- Commitment to treating every person you encounter with respect and dignity
- A full UK driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points
If you hold first aid, mental health first aid, or any security-related qualifications, that is a bonus, but not a barrier to applying if you do not.
In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.
This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.
If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.
LJMU values diversity and provides a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can fulfil their potential.
Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
